Presbyterian Pentecost Offering Supports Youth Development

The Rev. Joseph G. (Jody) Moore, Jr., pastor of Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, is shown above presenting a check from the church to Bonnie Bennett, program coordinator for the Dare County Friends of Youth.  The contribution represents 40 percent of the Pentecost offering given by church members and friends.  The Pentecost offering, authorized by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA, provides support for youth development, with 60 percent of the offering going to PCUSA’s youth development programs and 40 percent staying in the local community.  The mission of the Dare County Friends of Youth mentoring program is place “at-risk” youth between the ages of 6 – 17 with caring adult volunteers who serve as role models and friends.  Youth involved in the program are referred by various community and school sources, as well as by parents and guardians.  The youth face everyday difficulties and challenges, just like any other adolescent or pre-teen, but do not often have resources necessary to deal with their problems.  Adult volunteer mentors provide the youth with one-on-one time, at least eight hours each month for one year, in activities that build self-esteem, strong character, and friendship, helping the youth to strengthen ties at home and school.  Volunteers include business owners, public sector employees, educators, retirees, and others who want to improve the lives of young people in the community.  Adults interested in exploring becoming a youth mentor may contact Ms. Bennett at 252-475-5753.
